Guildwars 2 - How to upgrade your trial account

A few options to choose from:

1. Via the game client interface which you can upgrade either by credit card or PayPal. This option cost your US$59.90 for a standard edition.
2. Purchase the retail game box and get the activation key to upgrade. "How?" Read on.
3. Purchase the digital copy from other 3rd party sites like GreenManGaming and get the activation key to upgrade. "How?" Read on.

The most frustrating issue is you could not find anywhere on your account page to upgrade your trial account or activate a key. So you got your activation key and browsed all the account pages for it. Then you move on to support site or even search on the internet, losing your precious gaming hours.

Here is how to activate your key on your existing account.

In short, you log out from Guildwars 2 site. And click on the register link to re-register this activation key under your trial account. Who would have thought to go through the process twice since you already registered an account.

Background story

Recently, Guildwars 2 have a free trial event which if you are invited by your friends, you can play for a few days free.

Hence my friend invited me and I registered, downloaded the client (it is huge) and jumped in when the event started.

My friend also informed me that there is a promotion going on GreenManGaming, a whooping 25% off for most digital games. So I went and see if Guildwars 2 is up for discount. And it is! Saving 25%, why not.

For a standard digital copy, retail price at US$59.90. GreenManGaming is selling at US$57.99. With the discount code of 25% off, the price is down to US$43.50!

For a deluxe digital copy, retail price at US79.90. GreenManGaming is selling at US$67.99. With the discount code of 25% off, the price is down to US$51!

I was thinking, "A mere $8 bucks different for a deluxe digital copy. It's fine. Let's get this!" Hence, I bought it. With the activation key, I happily went to Guildwars 2 site. After searching on the account pages and in-game option. I could not find anyways to upgrade my trial account with the key. This got me worried.

After some searching and asking, I still do not have any solution. So I was thinking if there is anyway I can change the account email address. As I want to link to the same email account as my PayPal, maybe for some gems purchasing. There is no option for that. In my dismay, I filed a support ticket but I guess it will take long enough for a reply to get back.

I was thinking of registered the purchased key under another email. I could not concentrated playing on the trial account as I thought I might lose all the time training my character. Well, I went back digging in the internet for a solution and read up any similar cases.

Finally, I found how to do it. The support link I stated at the starting of this post. Solution: register the activation key to your account again. I was like "OMG. how user-friendly can this be." I register again with the new key, it works! Now now, back to gaming...


P.S : You can upgrade your standard version to deluxe version with 2000 gems. 100 gems is about 80 silver to 1 gold. So about 20 golds for a deluxe version. Does it worth the $20 bucks or in my case $8 bucks? I guess not. What's more, the item is bound to your character and you can only use once.
